Snapchat added a lens that gives clean-shaven faces "a full set of face furniture" in June 2020, per Tech Advisor, and women on TikTok turned beard filters into a joke on themselves. Today AI beard filters work from a single photo. ## What does Beard Filter mean? A beard filter is a preview and a punchline at the same time. For a clean-shaven man the beard filter answers a real question: would a beard suit me, and which one? YouCam's 2024 guide pitches it exactly that way, as a way to see a beard on you "without the commitment" of growing, trimming and styling one, and lists styles from stubble to a ducktail. For everyone else the beard filter is a costume. Women put it on and film their own reaction, friends put it on each other, and the laugh is how normal or how strange the same face looks with a beard. It works best on your own photo, or on someone who said yes. ## Why did Beard Filter take off? The beard filter needs only a face, and the change is big: a beard reshapes the jaw and the whole look, so the before and after reads in a second. It also answers a question a lot of men actually ask before they stop shaving. The reverse made it famous. In early 2021 the no beard filter took beards away on Snapchat and the reactions went to TikTok, where #NoBeardFilter had 87 million views by March 10, 2021, per iTechPost citing Newsweek. Adding a beard is the same trick run the other way, and it keeps coming back in "girls try the beard filter" Shorts. ## Where did Beard Filter come from? Snapchat had beards before the beard filter had a name. Its gender-swap lens of May 2019 gave the male version "a perfect five o'clock shadow," ClickOrlando reported. On June 18, 2020, Tech Advisor reported that Snapchat had added two filters that add or remove beards: "If you're clean shaven the app lets you add a full set of face furniture." The removal side went viral first. From February 2021, Distractify and Remezcla covered partners filming bearded men with Snapchat's no beard lens and posting the reactions on TikTok, and Dexerto was still explaining the lens, now called Beardless, in September 2024. The adding side became a joke of its own. In January 2022, Nylon described women creators on TikTok using a filter called Bearded Cutie, made by AR designer Paige Piskin, which adds a faint beard, groomed eyebrows, blue eyes and a septum piercing; Elsa Lakew (@sadimmigrantkid) said "If I looked like this I would start a podcast," and a podcast-host parody trend followed. There is no single viral moment for the beard filter itself: it's a filter people keep searching, now in AI versions that work from a photo. - **May 15, 2019:** Snapchat's gender-swap lens gives the male version a five o'clock shadow, per ClickOrlando. - **Jun 18, 2020:** Tech Advisor reports Snapchat filters that add or remove beards. - **Feb 2021:** Distractify covers the no beard filter on TikTok, a Snapchat lens. - **Mar 10, 2021:** #NoBeardFilter reaches 87 million views on TikTok, per iTechPost citing Newsweek. - **Mar 29, 2021:** Remezcla covers partners' reactions in the #NoBeardFilter challenge. - **Jan 28, 2022:** Nylon covers women on TikTok using the Bearded Cutie filter. - **Sep 29, 2024:** Dexerto explains the Snapchat Beardless lens behind the no beard trend. - **Oct 8, 2024:** YouCam's guide pitches beard filter apps as a way to preview a beard. - **Sep 6, 2025:** 0012am posts a mustache and goatee filter Short on YouTube. - **Jul 2026:** "Girls Try the Viral Beard Filter" Shorts are still being posted on YouTube. ## Popular versions of Beard Filter ### The would-a-beard-suit-me preview The practical beard filter: a clean-shaven man tries a full beard, stubble or a goatee before growing one. A beard filter adds facial hair to a face, live in a camera app or from a photo with AI, so you can see yourself with a full beard, stubble or a goatee. People use it to preview a beard before growing one, and as a joke on themselves. ### How do I get a beard filter on Snapchat? Snapchat's lenses are in Explore: tap the smiley face next to the capture button, open Explore and search "beard". Tech Advisor reported Snapchat lenses that add and remove beards in 2020; lens names and makers change, so pick one from the results and record. ### Is there a beard filter on TikTok? Yes, there have been. Nylon covered the Bearded Cutie filter on TikTok in January 2022, which adds a faint beard with groomed brows. The famous no beard clips were different: they were recorded with Snapchat's lens and uploaded to TikTok. ### Is there a beard filter on Instagram? None of the guides we read covered a beard effect built into Instagram. The workaround in 2021 filter guides was to record with a Snapchat lens, save the video and upload it to another app; or post a photo made with an AI beard filter. ### Is there a free beard filter? Camera lenses come with apps that are free to download, like Snapchat. Ours is not free: it makes a picture from your photo for 5 credits, and a picture that fails is refunded. ### What is the no beard filter? It's the reverse: a Snapchat lens, now called Beardless, that removes a beard. In 2021 partners filmed bearded men's reactions to it and posted them on TikTok under #NoBeardFilter, which had 87 million views by March 10, 2021, per iTechPost. ### Why do girls try the beard filter? For the laugh: a beard on a familiar face looks strange and funny. Nylon's 2022 piece said women on TikTok used the Bearded Cutie filter and joked about their look, and "girls try the beard filter" Shorts were still being posted in 2026. ### Does a beard filter show how my beard would really grow? No. A beard filter guesses: your face follows the photo, but the hair is imagined, full and even. A real beard can grow patchy or in another colour, so treat the result as a style preview, not a forecast. ### Which beard styles can I try with your beard filter? Type any style in "Beard style": full beard, stubble, goatee or a long wizard beard, for example. Leave it empty and you get a full beard. The colour follows your hair and eyebrows. ### Can I put a beard filter on someone else's photo? Only on your own photo, or with the person's permission. It's a joke for people who are in on it, never a way to fake a picture of someone or to tease them about how they look. ## Sources - [Tech Advisor: Snapchat adds two new facial hair filters for Father's Day (Jun 18, 2020)](https://www.techadvisor.com/article/739404/snapchat-adds-two-new-facial-hair-filters-for-fathers-day.html) - [ClickOrlando: Snapchat's new gender-swapping filter (May 15, 2019)](https://www.clickorlando.com/trending/snapchats-new-gender-swapping-filter-is-hilarious) - [Distractify: Guys on TikTok Are Using the "No Beard" Filter (Feb 2021)](https://www.distractify.com/p/tiktok-no-beard-filter) - [iTechPost: TikTok beard filter goes viral with over 87 million views (Mar 10, 2021)](https://www.itechpost.com/articles/104956/20210310/tiktok-beard-filter-goes-viral-over-87-million-views-use.htm) - [Remezcla: #NoBeardFilter TikTok challenge (Mar 29, 2021)](https://remezcla.com/culture/nobeardfilter-tiktok-challenge) - [Nylon: Clowning Men With Podcasts Is TikTok's Funniest New Meme (Jan 28, 2022)](https://www.nylon.com/life/tiktok-men-podcasts-meme-trend) - [Dexerto: How to get the viral 'no beard' filter on TikTok (Sep 29, 2024)](https://www.dexerto.com/tiktok/how-to-get-the-viral-no-beard-filter-on-tiktok-2914448) - [YouCam Makeup: beard filter apps (Oct 8, 2024)](https://www.perfectcorp.com/consumer/blog/selfie-editing/beard-filter-app) - [YouTube: Mustache and Goatee Filter, by 0012am (Sep 2025)](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/H2K076oxPc8) - [YouTube: Girls Try the Viral Beard Filter, by Elisheva Amza (Jul 2026)](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cy0IHNU_eTk) ## What changed on this page - Oct 23, 2026: Page added with dated sources, and a beard filter you can make from your photo, as a picture.
