## TL;DR

An eye color changer is a filter or photo editor that gives you a new eye color, such as ice blue, green or hazel, while the rest of your face stays the same. On TikTok it has come in waves: the S5 filter in 2022, the blue eye theory in 2023 and the Eye Rarity filter in 2024. There is no single viral moment, just a question people keep asking: what would I look like with different eyes?

## What does Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter) mean?

The eye color filter answers a simple, very old question: what would I look like with blue eyes, or green ones? A live filter does it on camera; an AI eye color changer does it on a photo, and the good ones change only the irises, keeping the pupils, the reflections and everything around the eyes.

On TikTok the question often comes with a twist. In the blue eye theory, people with brown eyes film the same stare twice, once with their own eyes and once with a blue eyes filter, to see whether blue eyes look more intimidating. Dexerto, explaining the trend in May 2023, put it plainly: it "is not a real theory with any scientific backing." It's a game, and the filter is the prop.

## Why did Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter) take off?

It costs nothing to wonder about, and the answer is instant. Eye color is one of the few things about a face you can't change with a haircut, so seeing yourself with green or gray eyes feels like a glimpse of another version of you.

It also makes a neat before-and-after. A comparison video needs only two shots of the same face, and the change is easy to spot even on a small phone screen. That's why the blue eye theory clips work: the viewer judges the stare, and the filter is the only difference between the two shots.

## Where did Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter) come from?

There is no single first post. Eye color filters have been on phone cameras for years, and each wave on TikTok came with its own name.

In March 2022 the wave was the S5 filter. Specsavers optometrist Dr Nigel Best warned, in coverage The Olive Press ran on March 16, 2022, about a challenge in which people tried to change their eye colour from brown to blue by shining bright light into their eyes while using the S5 filter, and said it could cause permanent damage. ITGeared wrote that August that the S5 challenge was a prank and pointed instead to TikTok's eye color effect, which turns eyes light blue and shifts the color when you shake the phone.

In spring 2023 came the blue eye theory. On April 28, 2023, the creator @benjikrol posted "maybe its true", a clip captioned "testing the blue eye theory"; TikTok shows it at 10.4 million plays. Dexerto explained the theory on May 13, 2023. A County Press piece from May 1, 2023 covered a cousin of the trend, the eye color chart, which is not a filter at all: you put a chart of shades behind you with the green screen effect and compare.

In April 2024 the Eye Rarity filter took over. Dexerto reported on April 16, 2024 that it had been used in over 319,000 videos; you match the on-screen color to your own eyes and it rates the shade from "Very Common" to "Extremely Rare". Since then, AI eye color changers that work from a photo have joined the live filters: VEED's, for example, asks you to upload a selfie and describe the color you want.

## Popular versions of Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter)

### The blue eye theory

Film the same expression twice, with your own eyes and with a blue eyes filter, and let viewers decide which stare is more intimidating. @benjikrol's April 2023 test is the best-known post.

### The Eye Rarity check

TikTok's Eye Rarity filter has you match your eye color on screen and rates how rare it is. Over 319,000 videos used it by April 2024, per Dexerto.

### The eye color chart

Not a filter: a chart of about 15 shades behind you, through the green screen effect, to find your "true" eye color, as County Press described in May 2023.

### The AI eye color changer

Upload one selfie, name a color and get a still photo back with only the irises changed. This is the version you can make on this page.

## How do I make Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter)?

- Photos: 1 photo of you.
- Output: image, vertical 9:16, about a minute, 5 credits.
- You choose: a caption (optional).
- Fixed: Only the irises change; everything else stays as in your photo.

### You get

- Your own photo with only the eye color changed: ice blue, or the color you type or pick
- The same face, expression, hair, clothes and background, in a vertical picture
- Natural-looking irises that keep their texture, pupils and reflections

### Not included

- A live camera filter or TikTok's Eye Rarity effect
- A video: this one is a picture
- Any other edit: no makeup, skin smoothing or face changes

## How to post Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter) on TikTok

1. An eye color changer works best on a sharp, front-facing selfie in daylight, eyes open and looking at the lens; glasses and heavy shade make the eyes harder to read.
2. Post the before and after side by side, or as two cuts, so the eye color change is the only difference.
3. For the blue eye theory, keep the same stare in both shots and ask viewers which one is more intimidating.

## Make your own

Put yourself in it from a photo at https://viralmeme.ai/meme/eye-color-changer: an image (5 credits). New accounts that sign in with Google get 10 free credits; a render that fails is refunded.

Examples on the page are made with AI, using AI-generated people, and the page says so under them (Image, 1 photo; Image, 1 photo).

## Questions about Eye Color Changer (Eye Color Filter)

### What is an eye color changer?

An eye color changer is a filter or photo editor that gives your eyes a new color while the rest of your face stays the same. Live filters do it on camera; AI versions edit a photo.

### Is there an eye color filter on TikTok?

Yes, several have trended. ITGeared described an eye color effect in 2022 that turns eyes light blue and shifts color when you shake the phone, and the Eye Rarity filter rates how rare your eye color is. Search "eye color" in Effects; names change often.

### What is the blue eye filter meme?

It's the blue eye theory: people with dark eyes film the same stare with and without a blue eyes filter to test whether blue eyes look more intimidating. Dexerto explained it in May 2023 and said the theory has no scientific backing.

### Is there an eye color filter on Instagram or Snapchat?

Both apps have creator-made lenses and effects that tint the eyes; search "blue eyes" or "eye color" in their effect galleries. Which ones show up changes over time and by region.

### Can I change my eye color in a photo online?

Yes. AI eye color changers such as VEED's ask you to upload a selfie and describe the color you want. On this page you add one photo, type a color or pick one, and get the same photo with new eyes.

### Can a filter change my eye color for real?

No. A filter or an AI edit only changes the picture. The S5 trend of shining bright light into your eyes doesn't change their color, and a Specsavers optometrist warned it could cause permanent damage.

### Does an eye color filter show my true eye color?

No. A filter paints a new color on; it doesn't measure yours. Even the eye color chart trend depends on your lighting and camera, so treat any result as a game.

### Which eye colors can I try here?

Any color you can describe in a few words: ice blue (the default), emerald green, hazel, gray, violet or your own, such as "light amber". The eye color changer only touches the irises; your face, hair and background stay as in the photo.

### How much does the eye color changer cost here?

Reading is free. Making a picture costs 5 credits, and if the image fails the credits go back to you.
