On October 15, 2026, Rockstar released the GTA 6 launch trailer without warning, and hours later Tesla's Roadster demo in Texas showed the car launching off a ramp and flipping over a row of cars. Within minutes people were posting the line, then AI clips and local versions of a car flying over traffic, potholes and parking lots. ## What does Flying Car Meme (We Got Flying Cars Before GTA 6) mean? The flying car meme is a joke about waiting. For years, "we got X before GTA 6" has been the internet's way of saying that something surprising happened in the real world while Grand Theft Auto 6 still wasn't out. Flying cars are the oldest promise of the future, so when a car seemed to fly in the same week the game finally got a launch trailer, the line wrote itself: "we really got flying cars before GTA 6." The flying car meme works even though neither half is quite true. GTA 6 now has a release date, November 19, 2026, so the wait is nearly over. And the Roadster doesn't really fly: it is launched off a ramp, fires cold-gas thrusters and lands past a row of cars. Aaj News noted the stunts don't prove sustained flight. Exaggeration is the point, as it always was with the format. Many posts drop GTA altogether. In those, the flying car meme is the car itself, imagined in ordinary life: clearing a traffic jam, skipping a toll booth or dropping into a parking space before anyone else can take it. ## Why did Flying Car Meme (We Got Flying Cars Before GTA 6) take off? Timing made the flying car meme. Kotaku reported that Rockstar posted the GTA 6 launch trailer on October 15 with no teasing, after years of rumors, leaks and delays, and the Roadster demo came hours later, according to The News International. Two long waits seemed to end on the same day, and the old template fit them perfectly. The footage did the rest. Business Insider described flying car memes appearing within minutes of the livestream, with jokes about overhead freeway signs, traffic police, insurance and spilled drinks. A car kickflipping over other cars is easy to picture somewhere else, which is how most flying car memes begin. Cheap AI video turned each joke into a clip. Gigazine collected dozens of AI-made "what if the Roadster existed" videos from October 16 and 17, many naming the tool they used. In Pakistan and India, a local flying car meme imagined the car on their own roads. A famous phrase, a strange video and a do-it-yourself angle carried the flying car meme across X, TikTok and news sites in about two days. ## Where did Flying Car Meme (We Got Flying Cars Before GTA 6) come from? The template is older than the car. meme.com records the earliest known "before GTA 6" post on June 11, 2020, and Know Your Meme calls the early uses sporadic. The format took off on July 27, 2023, when TikToker @jadendunn posted "we got aliens before GTA 6" after a congressional hearing about alleged UFOs. It never fully left, because the game kept not arriving: GTA 5 launched in September 2013, and GTA 6 went through two release-date delays before landing on November 19, 2026. The flying car meme began on October 15, 2026. In a livestream from the SpaceX site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla's next-generation Roadster drove up a ramp until it was upside down, flipped in midair and landed, then sped at a line of cars, took off and cleared them. Tesla says production is slated for 2028. That evening, fans were already posting that "we really got flying cars before GTA 6." On October 16 the flying car meme was all over X. Dexerto rounded up posts calling the car "Rocket League in real life," and even the White House account posted the caption with a GTA-styled image of a hovering car.
