AI Gender Swap
Same face, other gender. Your twin you never had, in one photo.
Post it today. Everyone gets it, nobody's tired of it.
An AI gender swap is a photo or short video of you, a friend or even your pet as the opposite gender, made by AI from one picture: same face, eyes and smile, with the hair, style and features of the other gender. The AI gender swap went viral first as Snapchat's gender filter in May 2019 and keeps coming back, most recently with AI swaps of celebrities in December 2025 and the female Draco Malfoy fan art wave in September 2026.
Who's in it?
What does AI Gender Swap mean?
An AI gender swap answers one question: what would I look like if I had been born the other gender? The AI keeps what makes a face yours, the eyes, the nose, the skin, the smile, and changes what people read as male or female: hair length, jawline, stubble or makeup, and the cut of the outfit. A good AI gender swap looks like your own twin.
People use an AI gender swap the way they used the old filters: as a joke in the group chat, a before and after on TikTok, or a couple's game. The idea now reaches past people: fans gender swap characters, and pet owners ask what their cat or dog would look like as a person. In Chinese internet slang that last idea has its own word, 娘化, turning anything into a girl.
Why did AI Gender Swap take off?
The AI gender swap works because it is about you. The result is personal enough to share, surprising enough to get a reaction, and easy to compare side by side.
In 2019 that tool was Snapchat's live filter. In late 2025 it was image AI, which can keep a face recognizable from a single photo, and AI gender swaps of famous people spread on TikTok. In September 2026 fan art of a female Draco Malfoy took over X. Each wave sends people back to try an AI gender swap on themselves.
Where did AI Gender Swap come from?
Gender swapping is older than AI: Know Your Meme traces female Draco Malfoy fan art back to a Tumblr post from 2011. The AI gender swap as a mass trend began with Snapchat. Its gender change filters were introduced on May 9, 2019, a YouTube tutorial passed 25,000 views the next day, and on May 10 people began posting their own results on Twitter. The Associated Press reported that some transgender people saw the filters as more than a joke, as a way to picture themselves.
The idea came back with image AI. In December 2025 the Daily Times reported that AI-generated gender swaps of Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber had gone viral, followed by a TikTok compilation of Taylor Swift as a man. Then, on September 22, 2026, X artist @redteneri posted Draco Malfoy as an anime girl, and the "Malfoid" fan art trend spread across X and Reddit within a week, Know Your Meme reported on September 30.

Popular versions of AI Gender Swap
The twin reveal
The classic AI gender swap: one selfie, then the same selfie as the other gender, posted side by side with a caption like "my twin brother" or "me if I was a girl".
The couple swap
Both partners in one photo, each turned into the other gender. The AI gender swap of a couple is a favourite because each person gets to judge the other's version.
The pet as a person
Your cat or dog as a person, most often a girl whose hair has the pet's fur colours, holding the pet itself. This is the AI gender swap closest to 娘化, turning anything into a girl.
The transformation video
A short clip where you look into the camera, a sparkle sweeps across and the other version of you finishes the move. On TikTok the AI gender swap video gets more replays than the photo.
How to post AI Gender Swap on TikTok
- Pick a clear, well-lit photo of your face, or of you and a friend, partner, parent or pet.
- Make your AI gender swap as an image to post side by side, or as a 12-second video that shows the swap.
- Post the before and after on TikTok or Instagram with a caption like "me if I was born a boy".
- Only swap people who agreed to it, and keep it kind: it is a game about yourself, not a way to mock anyone.
Questions about AI Gender Swap
What is an AI gender swap?
An AI gender swap is a picture or video of a real person as the opposite gender, made by AI from a photo. The face stays recognisable; hair, features and style change. On ViralMeme the AI gender swap is made from your own photo.
How do I do the AI gender swap with my own photo?
Open the make sheet on this page, choose who is in it, add a clear photo and pick image (5 credits) or video (10 credits); a failed render is refunded automatically.
Can I make an AI gender swap video, not just a photo?
Yes. The video version is 12 seconds, vertical: a sparkle sweeps across and the swapped version of you finishes the moment. It costs 10 credits.
Does the AI gender swap work both ways?
Yes. A man becomes his female version and a woman becomes her male version, as if each had been born the other gender, with the same face, eyes and skin tone.
Can I gender swap my cat or dog?
Yes: your pet becomes a grown woman with the pet's fur colours for hair and its eye colour, holding the pet. Choose "Pet" in the make sheet.
Is there a free AI gender swap filter?
Snapchat and TikTok have had live camera gender filters since 2019. ViralMeme isn't free: each render runs on paid AI models, and nothing is charged for a render that fails.
What is the gender swapped Malfoy meme?
It is fan art of Draco Malfoy as a girl that spread on X in late September 2026, often called "Malfoid". It is drawn art of a character, so we explain it rather than make it.
Can I gender swap a celebrity or a friend's photo?
We only make an AI gender swap of the people in your own photos, and only people who agreed to it. We don't make swaps of celebrities or other real people's photos.
Will the AI gender swap still look like me?
That is the point of it: the model keeps your face shape, eyes, skin tone and expression. Use a sharp photo facing the camera.
Is the AI gender swap trend offensive?
When Snapchat's filter went viral in 2019, some people said it made light of transgender lives, while the Associated Press found some trans people who found it helpful. Keep your AI gender swap about yourself and kind, and it stays a game.
