Push Square reported that Fortnite climbed past five million concurrent players at its peak after the Pirate Shop went viral.
The hunt grew its own side economy, which fed more jokes. Dexerto reported players offering paid carries, selling tools they claimed would raise the odds, and an eBay listing asking $10,000 for an account with unused Pirate Shop Access, all of which break Epic's rules. By November 5, Lessons in Meme Culture had a video titled "Fortnite Pirate Shop Is Making Gamers Go Insane," and Google was suggesting "fortnite pirate token meme."
