Liberty Biberty (The Mascot the Internet Hates)
Liberty Biberty is Liberty Mutual's fuzzy yellow puppet mascot, launched in summer 2026, and the meme is how much the internet hates it. Sports fans complained about its ads all season, John Oliver tore into it on Last Week Tonight on October 11, and on October 25 a 19-year-old YouTuber led several dozen people in an "I HATE LIBERTY BIBERTY" protest outside the company's Boston headquarters, as the Boston Globe reported.

What does Liberty Biberty (The Mascot the Internet Hates) mean?
Liberty Biberty is a round, fuzzy yellow puppet that Liberty Mutual introduced in summer 2026 to star in its insurance ads. It was made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop and designed by Liberty Mutual with the creative agency Bandits & Friends, according to the Boston Globe. The name was not new: since 2019 the company's ads had featured an actor, Tanner Novlan, struggling to say the company's name, and "Liberty Biberty" had become a familiar catchphrase. The puppet was meant to turn that catchphrase into a character.
The Liberty Biberty meme is the backlash. The ads ran constantly during sports broadcasts, and fans started posting about how much they disliked the "weird yellow furball": jokes about hitting it out of a home run derby, complaints that it was everywhere, and simple posts of its name. The Globe described anger at Liberty Biberty "from Reddit threads and Facebook groups to TikToks and the world of late-night comedy."
What makes it funny is the scale of the reaction to something so harmless. As Boston University advertising professor Doug Gould told the Globe, the "rebellion" is interesting "because it's a harmless little creature." Hating Liberty Biberty became a shared joke, and then, for a few dozen people in Boston, an afternoon out.
Why did Liberty Biberty (The Mascot the Internet Hates) take off?
Liberty Biberty became a meme because almost everyone saw the ads, often, and nobody asked for them. Liberty Mutual's chief marketing officer, Jenna Lebel, told the Globe in July that 40 to 50 percent of the company's marketing spend would go toward promoting the new mascot, so it showed up again and again in commercial breaks during baseball and football broadcasts. Repetition plus a strange-looking puppet is a reliable recipe for an internet grudge.
Then it got a famous critic. On the October 11 episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said the name "sounds like what the Devil would shout in tongues to herald his arrival on Earth," and added: "While this show is firmly on the record as being pro-puppet, let me be clear: not this one. I hate this thing." BroBible reported that Oliver also suggested viewers try the same online tactic he credited with getting New Zealand's Kiwibank to drop its sheep mascot.
The joke turned physical. Connor Harvey, a 19-year-old YouTuber from New Hampshire, posted "The Death of Mascots" and then an "official announcement" for a protest, which drew more than 600,000 views and briefly topped YouTube's most-hyped list, according to the Globe. Searches followed: Google now suggests "liberty biberty protest," "liberty biberty costume," "liberty biberty meme explained" and "why are people mad about liberty biberty."
Where did Liberty Biberty (The Mascot the Internet Hates) come from?
Liberty Mutual launched the Liberty Biberty character in summer 2026, alongside its long-running LiMu Emu and Doug ads rather than replacing them. A press release said the campaign was meant to turn the familiar "Liberty Biberty" catchphrase into "a lasting brand asset." By late September, the puppet had become a regular target for sports fans online, and BroBible collected viral complaints from games on October 13.
Earlier in October, Connor Harvey, who posts on YouTube as DimesAreTasty, called the mascot "the worst mascot of all time" in "The Death of Mascots" and, half as a joke, called for a protest. "I just thought a protest against a puppet would be a funny idea," he told the Globe on October 22. When the video took off, he made it real.
On Sunday, October 25, several dozen people gathered outside Liberty Mutual's headquarters in Boston's Back Bay, the Globe reported, some in matching "I HATE LIBERTY BIBERTY" sweatshirts and others carrying signs like "Liberty from Biberty." "This is a revolution, this is the next Boston Tea Party," Harvey said. One man came dressed as the mascot to defend it. Liberty Mutual did not comment, and Insurance Journal wrote up the protest on October 27.
