Half of you, half of your mom, one line down the middle. Everyone at Thanksgiving was right.

TL;DR

The split face trend is a portrait made from two photos: half of your face joined down the centre line to half of your mom's or dad's, usually in black and white, to show how much you look alike. Early AI versions appeared in August 2026, and it took off on TikTok in September through CapCut templates and ChatGPT prompts, often captioned "You look like your mom." People now make it with siblings, partners and best friends too.

What does Split Face Trend (You Look Like Your Mom) mean?

A split face trend post answers the oldest family question: who do you take after? You take a straight-on photo of yourself and one of a parent, and an app or an AI image tool cuts both down the middle and lines them up so the eyes, nose and mouth meet at the centre. The result reads as one face, half you and half them, and the resemblance either jumps out or it doesn't.

Most split face trend portraits are black and white, which makes the two halves look like one picture. The captions do the rest: "You look like your mom," "you look just like your dad," or "I favor them both." The split face trend is sweet rather than mocking: posts thank a parent or settle a family argument about whose nose you got.

Why did Split Face Trend (You Look Like Your Mom) take off?

The split face trend spread because everyone has heard "you look just like your mother" and wants to see if it's true. It needs only two photos most people already have, and the moment the halves click together is the whole post. The comments fill with requests to try the split face trend with someone else. Under the biggest tutorial, the most-liked replies were "me and my mom," "Me and my best friend" and "Me and brother," according to MakeViral's count.

Tools made it easy. CapCut templates turned the split face trend into a short clip in a few taps, and creators posted ChatGPT prompts in captions and comments so others could copy the black-and-white look. The prompt that went round asks for a black-and-white portrait collage with the two faces joined down the middle, and tells the AI to keep each person's own features rather than blend them into an average face. An averaged face proves nothing; two true halves show the real resemblance.

Where did Split Face Trend (You Look Like Your Mom) come from?

The idea is not new. In 2011 the Quebec photographer Ulric Collette went viral with Genetic Portraits, family members' faces split down the middle and joined by hand. The 2026 split face trend is the AI-era version.

Know Your Meme traces the earliest AI posts to August 7, 2026, when an Instagram user shared two colour images comparing her face with her mother's and her father's, made with Meta's AI tool. On August 19, TikTok user ngomai729 posted a Russian-language CapCut tutorial for a "half face" version, and more Russian-language how-tos spread a couple version through late August. Know Your Meme says the exact post that started the black-and-white wave is unknown.

The split face trend took off in September. On September 8, clzl3vnad2 posted a CapCut tutorial that gained nearly 98,000 likes in 10 days; MakeViral counted 4.8 million views by October 14. Parent posts followed, including us3rqxr's comparison with their father on September 12 and idatravels05's "You look like your mom" around September 12 to 13 (sources differ by a day), which MakeViral counted at 779,900 views. Know Your Meme added an entry on September 17 and published an explainer the next day. MakeViral says US searches for the split face trend rose from almost none in August to about 1,900 in September, and new posts were still appearing daily in mid-October.
