Chile Meme (Skinny Chile)

The Chile meme is a geography joke. Chile runs down the Pacific coast of South America for about 4,270 km, but it is at most 445 km wide and only 90 km at its narrowest, according to figures from the Chilean government cited by T13. The meme takes that thin shape literally, as if a country so narrow could only hold narrow things.

So a Chile meme shows a car one seat wide, a house that is one long corridor, a chess board in a single row, a bedroom where only one bed fits, a stretched toilet or a football pitch as narrow as a running track. Many posts are captioned "How I still imagine Chile," "POV: you're in Chile" or "average town in Chile." One TikToker shared a Chile meme captioned "Text wouldn't fit cuz chile too thin."

Know Your Meme compares the format to Ohio memes, since both treat a real place as a strange world with its own rules. Here the shape is the whole punchline. It pokes fun at the outline of a country, not at the people who live there, and that is how most Chileans have taken it.

The Chile meme spread because it needs no explanation. As The Brew News put it, the map shape supplies the punchline: anyone who has seen a world map gets it at a glance, in any language. That made it easy to share across borders, and Chilean media reported examples in French, English, Russian, Italian and Japanese.

It is also easy to make. Squeezing a photo sideways takes seconds in any editing app, so everyone could add their own Chile meme with a new object, from phones and pools to buses and Metro stations. Juan Francisco Ugarte, an academic at the University of Santiago, told Radio Agricultura that the humor is mainly visual and that Chileans joining in with their own versions helped feed the algorithm. "Chile es un país de memes," he said: Chile is a country of memes.

Big numbers did the rest. The September 18 TikTok passed 2.3 million views in five days and drew nearly half a million likes, and a version about narrow schools passed 2.1 million views in three days. When Ryanair joined in on September 24 with a post of extremely thin planes flying to Chile, brands were in on the Chile meme too.

Jokes about Chile's shape are older than this wave. The earliest notable Chile meme on Know Your Meme was posted to r/memes on September 13, 2020: a chili pepper laid over a map of Chile, captioned "Ah yes, chili." It has passed 25,000 upvotes. On July 10, 2024, X user @flglmn quoted a map post noting that Chile is long enough to bridge Spain and Canada, adding that it "refuses to do so"; that post passed 138,000 likes. In February 2026, the Instagram account hardimages.chile posted a very narrow car next to a map of Chile, captioned in Spanish "Autos en chile be like."

The 2026 wave began on TikTok. On September 18, @secret_compte_spam posted narrow versions of a car, a house and a football pitch, captioned "How I still imagine Chile." Chilean broadcaster T13 reported that French users were the first to use the outline this way, and that American users then spread it; The Brew News also says the wave gained momentum among French-speaking users before going international.

Know Your Meme added an entry on September 23. Two days later the Chile meme was news in Chile itself, where T13 and Radio Agricultura described mixed reactions: some Chileans felt picked on, while many laughed and made their own versions. On October 2, Know Your Meme's September Meme of the Month poll put Chile memes in second place with 8.4% of the vote, behind "Things to Say" with 11.6%.
